If you love being in the forest, this is the perfect hike for you. Taking in 2 forests, a small woodland and a castle your soul is re-energised by nature as you fill your lungs with the fresh smells from the forest floor and the sounds of birds in the trees.
We meet at Kirke Hvalsø train station and take a stroll through this sleepy town towards the village church, then depart the main street and head through the suburbs to the open fields that lead us to Bidstrup Forest. The old forest trail that we join is called Skjoldungesti and it winds around one of Denmarks 6 National Parks, Nationalpark Skjoldungernes Land. As we progress along the trail we pass Avnsø which is a local swimming lake, take the fun path past the Scouts hut and head downhill into teeny tiny Skov Hastrup village before rejoining the nature trail that leads us through a small woodland, along the railway track and into Ledreborg Slotspark (Castle Park). We depart the Skjoldungesti here and head along the back trail out of Ledreborg Slotspark, giving us a perfect panoramic view of the castle and valley. The trail leads us along the railway track and down to the train station where we say goodbye.
This hiking route is definitely a high contender for one of the best hikes on Sjælland. Not only do you get a view of Ledreborg Castle with its bright yellow facade but you also get to hike through one of the best forests on the island, Bidstrup Skov.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is not included in the ticket fee?
The cost of transport to/from the meeting/departure points, food, drink, hiking gear.
What will I need to bring?
Food, water, clothes to suit the weather, sunscreen if it is clear, a rucksack, hiking shoes (no trendy street trainers, they will give you blisters).
Will there be toilets along the route?
There are only toilets at the train stations so if you need to use the toilet on the trail be prepared that you will be as natural as the wildlife that already lives there.
How difficult is the route?
This route has some gentle hills in the forests and fields with a very steep hill in Ledreborg Slotspark. The hike is fairly easy throughout with a moderate difficulty near the end. We will walk at a pace that everyone can keep up. The idea is to get out in nature and enjoy the journey, not race to the end.
Will we stop for lunch?
This route takes about 3.5 hours to complete at a steady calm pace, so we will not stop for a designated lunch break but you are welcome to bring snacks and drinks to keep your energy levels up. Try to eat before the hike and it should last you until the end. If anyone needs a break we can make a short stop, nothing is set in stone.
What happens if it rains?
The weather is unpredictable and often in Denmark, it can be wet and windy just when you don't want it to. The hike will not be cancelled due to rain unless it is a crazy thunderstorm, which you will receive money back or reschedule the hike to a new date. Therefore, please wear or bring wet weather clothing to protect yourself from getting cold and wet during the hike. Sometimes the wet days bring the most memories!
